Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, famously said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river, and he’s not the same man.” This idea mirrors the fluidity of our identities, which evolve through experiences, introspection, and our interaction with the world. Our identities constantly evolve, empowering us to grow and redefine ourselves.
This process becomes particularly impactful after military service, a period marked by a profound shift in identity for many. However, I've learned to see this not merely as a loss but as an opportunity to reinvent myself. The military instills a profound sense of purpose and community, profoundly influencing our roles and how we view ourselves. Yet, these roles can become confining, distancing us from our essence.
My journey to break free from these confines was significantly aided by psychedelic experiences, which dissolved the boundaries between me and the universe, unveiling a deep interconnectedness. Yet, it’s through daily practices like meditation, mindfulness, and journaling that I've grounded these revelations in everyday life. These practices have allowed me to observe my thoughts and emotions from a distance, revealing that my true self extends beyond my roles and the transient states of mind.
These insights have propelled me to deeply explore my identity, urging me to peel back the layers of societal expectations. While psychedelics opened the door to this exploration, it's the consistent application of meditation, mindfulness, and journaling that sustains my journey, offering me daily tools to rediscover my essence beyond my military service.

A Personal Journey
As we continue this journey, I want to share my path, marked by profound pain, transformative experiences, and a rebirth into a life of purpose and fulfillment. My journey is a testament to the power of self-reflection, acceptance, and the willingness to embrace the unknown.
The Root of Moral Injury
My existential crisis was precipitated by a pivotal moment during the invasion of Iraq, where the catastrophic loss of civilian life, particularly women and children, inflicted a deep moral injury. Holding a dying child in my arms forced me to confront the harrowing realities of war and its impact on my sense of identity, worthiness, and connection. This moment of profound tragedy was a stark reminder of the complex interplay between our actions and our sense of self.
Embracing Uncertainty with Ibogaine
The path to healing began with an ibogaine journey that reshaped my entire outlook on life. It taught me to view each step of my journey as necessary and intentional, transforming my understanding of life's experiences.
